The southern route of Mass Rapid Transit Line-5 in Dhaka secures $4.5 billion financing from ADB and South Korea, alongside government funds, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion with a metro service spanning 17.20km from Gabtoli to Dasherkandi by 2030. The project includes over 13km underground and 4.10km elevated lines, facilitating 19 trains with 6 air-conditioned coaches and a capacity of 1,908 passengers per train. The funding, a mix of concessional and non-concessional loans, supports the ADB’s pipeline for the year, with South Korea providing a soft loan. Once operational, the project aims to reduce travel time, catering to Dhaka’s growing population and contributing to environmental improvement. Dhaka’s metro rail network plans to span 140km by 2030, accommodating 50 lakh people across six lines.
