Bangladesh’s ship recycling industry continues to advance toward global environmental and safety standards. As two additional shipbreaking yards in Chattogram have secured green certification, bringing the total number of certified yards in the country to 14.
The development has been supported by an estimated investment of around BDT 70 crore. Reflecting strong private sector commitment to upgrading facilities. And aligning with international compliance standards, including the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.
The newly certified yards have introduced improved infrastructure and operational systems. Including enhanced hazardous waste management, safer dismantling processes, and strengthened worker safety protocols. These upgrades are critical to ensuring environmentally responsible operations and meeting global buyer expectations.
Chattogram remains the hub of Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector, which contributes approximately 50% of the country’s domestic steel supply. Underscoring its strategic importance to construction, infrastructure and industrial growth.
With 14 green certification yards now operational, Bangladesh is strengthening its position as a competitive and responsible destination for ship recycling. The expansion of certified facilities is expected to attract higher-value vessels, improve compliance standards, and support long-term industry sustainability.
This milestone reflects a broader transition within the sector toward sustainable industrial growth. Positioning Bangladesh to align economic growth with environmental stewardship and global best practices.
