Germany will finance €52.5 million (around BDT 7.24 billion) to support climate-resilient urban development in Bangladesh. The funding, part of a development cooperation agreement signed between the two governments, aims to help cities adapt to climate change and improve living conditions through sustainable infrastructure.
A financial agreement on development cooperation was signed between Bangladesh and Germany government at Economic Relations Division (ERD) on Wednesday.
ERD Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Bangladesh, Achim Tröster, signed the agreement on behalf of the two governments.
This is the first funding after the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) of Bangladesh – German Climate and Development Partnership (CDP), signed by the two governments in December 2024.
The project under this fund will support local government institutions to strengthen the adaptive capacity and reduce the exposure of vulnerable populations to climate change effects by improving the living conditions and through climate-sensitive planning and implementation of infrastructure projects for climate adaptation.
The fund can also be used for replenishments and future follow-up projects of German Cooperation, according to a press release of German Embassy.
