JERA Co Inc and Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement will explore potential cooperation in Bangladesh’s energy sector.
The two sides will assess opportunities related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply and supporting LNG infrastructure. They will also examine other areas of possible energy cooperation.
Bangladesh continues to face rising energy demand. The country also needs a reliable supply of energy to support economic growth and industrial activity.
JERA plans to use its global experience across the LNG value chain and power sector during the discussions. The company will work with Petrobangla to assess possible areas of collaboration.
Any future step will depend on the outcome of these discussions and related research. The MoU does not include any investment decision or firm project commitment.
JERA is also among several international companies exploring a land-based LNG terminal in Bangladesh. The proposed terminal would have an annual capacity of 7.5 million metric tonnes.
The companies are considering Matarbari Island as a potential location for the terminal. JERA has also expressed interest in supplying LNG to Bangladesh over the long term.
The company already has a presence in Bangladesh’s energy sector. Its activities include an investment in JERA Meghnaghat Power Limited.
The latest MoU could expand JERA’s engagement with Bangladesh across LNG supply and infrastructure. It could also support broader efforts to strengthen the country’s long-term energy security.
