Innovations Against Poverty, known as IAP, has officially launched in Bangladesh with the goal of supporting inclusive businesses that bring sustainable solutions to low-income communities. Funded by the Swedish government through SIDA and managed by global development organization SNV, IAP is a challenge fund that provides matching grants, tailored advisory support, and market access assistance to businesses. These businesses aim to create measurable social impact while maintaining commercial viability.
IAP focuses on enterprises that are often overlooked by traditional investors. These businesses fall into what is referred to as the “missing middle”, too big for microfinance yet too small for mainstream commercial investment. By offering grants ranging from €50,000 to €200,000 along with expert guidance, IAP helps them overcome early growth challenges and prepare for long-term sustainability. The initiative is designed to support companies that work directly with low-income communities as suppliers, distributors, employees, or customers. Whether it is sourcing raw materials from small-scale farmers, enabling last-mile delivery networks, or designing affordable essential products, IAP champions business models that are both inclusive and profitable.
In Bangladesh, IAP will prioritize sectors including clean energy, climate resilience, food security, water and sanitation, and digital inclusion. The program places a strong emphasis on gender equality, youth empowerment, and financial inclusion to ensure that development outcomes are both equitable and far-reaching. With a growing entrepreneurial ecosystem and a large population poised for economic inclusion, Bangladesh presents a strong opportunity for businesses that seek to innovate for impact.
Globally, between 2017 and 2023, IAP supported thirty-nine businesses across Africa and Asia. As a result of this support, two million people gained improved access to essential goods and services, 700,000 individuals saw an increase in income or cost savings, and over € 54 million in additional investment were mobilized. The supported businesses generated over € 22 million in new sales revenue, avoided or reduced 37,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, and improved the quality of life for 92 percent of their customers. 83 percent of customers accessed a particular product or service for the first time.
Now expanding to Bangladesh, IAP offers a powerful opportunity for businesses with bold, scalable ideas that can transform lives. Through a combination of catalytic funding, technical support, and ecosystem partnerships, the initiative aims to accelerate inclusive business models that deliver both impact and profit.
