In Bagerhat, Bangladesh, carpenters from Natural Fibre Enterprise are crafting 120 eco-friendly wooden houses for export to Belgium, showcasing the country’s craftsmanship and sustainability. These houses are being manufactured entirely from locally sourced Mahogany wood. Each raw material must meet strict environmental standards, sourced in a biodegradable and eco-friendly manner. Each house costs around BDT 20 lakh-25 lakh and measures 11 meters long and over 4 meters wide. The houses are segmented for easy transport and assembly.
This initiative, creating new markets and employment in Bagerhat, has carpenters working diligently on components like doors, windows, frames, and walls. The finished products are aesthetically pleasing, eco-friendly, painted, and polished by skilled hands. Mozahid, a local carpenter, noted the training they received to build these houses, and how the design impressed both the company and the foreign buyer. Nearly 200 workers are involved, with favorable weather allowing completion of a house in just a week.
However, transporting these houses to Chattogram Port, 450 kilometers away, poses a challenge. Consultant Md Moniruzzaman Molla Shahin suggested that exporting through the closer Mongla port, only 40 kilometers away, would save time and money. The initiative’s success in exporting these houses will enhance Bangladesh’s reputation.
Natural Fibre has made headlines earlier by exporting wooden bicycles to Europe, having sent 20,000 units to Greece by February 2024. The company also produces eco-friendly products like sunbeds, hotel beds, and pet toys. This venture into eco-friendly wooden houses continues to enhance Bangladesh’s profile in sustainable and innovative manufacturing, showcasing the potential for further foreign direct investment in the country’s burgeoning export sector.
