Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar in Mirsarai made its first major export shipment worth $12 million through a Chinese company, Kiaxi Lingerie, located in the Bepza Economic Zone. Kiaxi Lingerie exported 180,000 pieces of lingerie to Spain, marking a significant milestone. The shipment, now at the container depot, will be sent through the Chattogram port.
Jaman Ullah, HR officer at Kiaxi Lingerie, confirmed the shipment, noting a total order of 136 million pieces for Spain. Kiaxi Lingerie currently employs 1,000 workers but faces challenges due to limited housing in the industrial area. This has restricted the factory to 25% of its production capacity, despite its ability to employ 4,000 workers.
The company has invested $60.85 million in three factories within the Bangabandhu Shilpa Nagar. The first 100,000 square foot unit began production earlier this year. Construction of the other two units is on hold due to labor and logistical issues. Bepza data shows other Chinese companies, such as Fengqun Composite Material Co (BD) Ltd and KPST Shoes (BD) Co Ltd, also operate in the economic zone.
Shibu Ranjan Das, director of Bepza Economic Zone, stated that factories have exported goods worth $1 million since last November. The Bepza Economic Zone, located on 1,138.55 acres with 539 industrial plots, aims to attract $2.70 billion in FDI. Over 100 companies have applied for plots, with 23 already allocated.
These companies will produce a diverse range of goods, including shoe accessories, packaging materials, finished lubricants, camping equipment, cashew nuts, apparel, and paper products. The economic zone’s development highlights the growing industrial capacity and potential for investment in Bangladesh.
