Aquaculture Farming Sees PRAN‑RFL Group Invest €30 Million

The PRAN‑RFL Group, one of Bangladesh’s largest diversified conglomerates, has entered a strategic partnership with Denmark‑based Assentoft Aqua. To establish an aquaculture farming industrial‑scale facility in Bangladesh. This collaboration marks a significant new chapter for the country’s aquaculture sector, combining advanced technology with export‑oriented production.

Strategic Partnership to Boost Aquaculture

Under a memorandum of understanding signed at the PRAN Centre in Dhaka, Habiganj Agro Limited a sister concern of PRAN‑RFL and Assentoft Aqua will jointly develop an intensive indoor fish farming facility using Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology. The total investment is €30 million (approximately Tk 429 crore). The execution shall be in 2-3 phases over the next two years.

The proposed project is expected to be located in the Mirsharai Economic Zone or at a mutually agreed alternative site. Designed to meet both domestic and international market demand. The facility will focus initially on producing Asian seabass, expanding to other valuable species such as grouper and hilsa.

Advanced Technology for Sustainable Production

RAS technology enables environmentally efficient, high‑density fish production by treating and reusing water through filtration and automation. This approach reduces water use and environmental impact while supporting higher and more predictable production yields compared to traditional systems.

At full capacity, the facility aims for an annual production capacity of around 2,000 tonnes. With most output targeted for export markets and a portion available to meet growing domestic consumption.

Strengthening Bangladesh’s Aquaculture Potential

Speaking on the partnership, PRAN Group Managing Director Eleash Mridha emphasised the company’s commitment to developing Bangladesh’s aquaculture industry. Introducing world‑class RAS technology to the country. Assentoft Aqua’s involvement supported by Danish government‑backed financing and global experience in aquaculture underscores confidence in Bangladesh’s potential to become a hub for value‑added marine fish production.

This project aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the country’s fish farming and seafood export potential, increase technology transfer, and generate employment, particularly in high‑value agribusiness segments. By producing premium fish species at scale, the initiative could help diversify Bangladesh’s export basket and enhance resilience in its agricultural and fisheries sectors.
