The remote shoal of Latshal Char, once characterized by seasonal inundation and barren landscapes, has undergone a profound transformation catalyzed by the introduction of the Teesta Solar Plant by Beximco Group. This landmark initiative, the largest solar project in Bangladesh with an investment of Tk 3,000 crore, has not only reshaped the area’s image but yielded remarkable returns, exemplifying the potential of renewable energy ventures.
In its inaugural year, the Teesta Solar Project generated Tk634 crore in return. Beximco officials are confident that project costs will be recouped within five years. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2023, the solar power plant began transmitting power to the national grid on a trial basis in January of that year. Depending on solar radiation, the plant can generate up to 200 megawatts. The plant has so far supplied 42.31 crore units of electricity to the national grid, alleviating power shortages in districts including Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat. This has led to tangible socio-economic development, benefiting nearly 10 lakh people and fostering growth in business, commerce, industry, and agriculture.
Gautam Das, the project director, described major infrastructure developments: an 8-kilometer river embankment, about 20 kilometers of new roads, 5.5 lakh solar panels, and 85 mounting piles. 120 inverters connect to these panels, transmitting electricity to the national grid through 28 box transformers and 132kV transmission lines.
Moreover, establishing a theme park and riverbank protection dam surrounding the solar plant has spurred tourism, attracting numerous visitors and stimulating local economies. Business and productivity in the vicinity have flourished, accompanied by a surge in land prices. Ahmed Shayan F Rahman, CEO of Beximco Group, emphasized the Teesta solar project’s role as a symbol of sustainable progress, illuminating Bangladesh’s path towards a greener future. By harnessing renewable energy at scale, the initiative not only advances environmental goals but also empowers communities, enhances livelihoods, and sets a global standard for responsible energy development.
