Bangladesh Potato Exports Expand To Vietnam

Bangladesh Potato Exports Expand To Vietnam

Bangladesh’s potato sector is gaining traction in global markets, supported by rising export volumes and the opening of new international destinations. The recent approval of Bangladesh potato exports to Vietnam marks a significant step in expanding market access, particularly in Southeast Asia, and reflects growing confidence in the country’s agricultural standards and compliance capacity.

As one of the world’s largest potato producers, Bangladesh generates over 10 million tonnes annually, creating a strong supply base for both domestic consumption and export. However, the sector has long faced constraints related to storage, logistics, and limited market access. Recent developments signal a shift, with policy support and improved trade facilitation enabling greater participation in global agricultural trade.

Bangladesh’s potato exports recorded a sharp increase in FY2025, rising nearly fourfold from around 13,000 tonnes to over 50,000 tonnes. Export earnings also climbed significantly, reaching an estimated USD 20–25 million, compared to less than USD 10 million in the previous year. Key export destinations include Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal, and Middle Eastern markets, with Vietnam now emerging as a new addition.

Despite this growth, exports still account for less than 1% of total production, highlighting substantial untapped potential. Bangladesh currently operates over 400 cold storage facilities, yet inefficiencies in supply chains, post-harvest handling, and compliance with international phytosanitary standards continue to limit export scalability.

The expansion into Vietnam comes at a critical time as Bangladesh seeks to diversify its export basket beyond traditional sectors such as ready-made garments. Strengthening agricultural exports—particularly high-volume crops like potatoes can help stabilize domestic prices, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase farmer incomes.

Industry experts emphasize that unlocking the sector’s full export potential will require targeted investments in cold chain infrastructure, quality certification systems, and agro-processing capabilities. Developing processed potato products and improving logistics efficiency can further enhance competitiveness in global markets.

With strong production capacity and growing international demand, Bangladesh is well-positioned to scale its presence in the global potato market. Continued focus on market access, quality compliance, and supply chain modernization will be essential to transforming the sector into a reliable contributor to export earnings and rural economic growth.
